UWC Costa Rica Students Make a Difference During Community Action Week

Written by: UWC Costa Rica
UWC Costa Rica is committed to developing leaders passionate about social and environmental change. Community action, an integral part of our co-curricular program, involves students engaging in meaningful projects that benefit local communities.

Next week, from Feb 10 to 14, 200 students from 66 countries will be out of campus for Community Action Week. They will travel to 12 communities across Costa Rica, touching each of the seven provinces, and work on projects that address local needs and promote sustainability.

Impactful Projects Across Costa Rica

Our students worked on various projects, all designed around community action and sustainability principles. Here are some highlights:
  • Environmental Conservation: Students worked on projects such as reforestation, trail maintenance, and sea turtle monitoring in Monteverde, Puerto Jiménez, and Acosta.
  • Learning from Local Knowledge: Students immersed themselves in Indigenous communities, learning about their traditions and helping with projects like building a community garden in Bribrí, reforesting with the Malekus, and supporting reforestation efforts in Guatuso.
  • Exploring Regenerative Food Systems: Students visited organic farms and sustainable agriculture projects in Oreamuno and Osa, learning about sustainable farming practices and local food systems.
  • Building Equitable Communities: Students worked on community development projects in Quepos, Guanacaste, and San Isidro de Heredia, including teaching workshops and improving community spaces.

A Transformative Experience

Community Action Week is a transformative experience for our students. They not only make a positive impact on the communities they serve, but they also develop essential skills and values, such as:
  • Understanding diverse realities
  • Developing a sense of responsibility
  • Enhancing soft skills
  • Experiential learning
  • Commitment to society
As Katy de la Garza, our Educational Director, says, "We are proud to see our students making a difference in Costa Rica. Community Action is integral to their education, fostering values shaping them into future leaders."

Community Action is a vital part of a holistic education. It empowers our students to become engaged citizens committed to creating a better world.

We hope this blog post gives you a glimpse into the incredible work of our students during Community Action Week.
